Many disabled canoeists will test the waters for the first time this Sunday, thanks to the Oxford Mail .
Falcon Rowing and Canoe Club starts lessons for the disabled from its boathouse on land next to Donnington Bridge, Oxford, at 11am.
The course has been made possible following a £450 grant as part of the Oxford Mail and British Gas community chest giveaway last year. The cash was used to buy a specially adapted canoe.
Oxford Mail editor James McClure said: "I am delighted that the Oxford Mail and British Gas were able to help the group get off the ground. We are glad to contribute the community of Oxford."
The club still needs to find people willing to train as coaches and helpers. Volunteers are asked to attend this Sunday's event.
The British Canoe Union will have representatives on hand at the club, offering advice and training opportunities for those willing to learn teach the disabled.
Club chairman Peter Travis said: "Until there is a trained team of helpers, only little time can be spent on the water. Helpers who have disabilities themselves are especially sought."
On Sunday, the group is also to decide on what will be its official name, and members will be asked to suggest fundraising ideas, so it can buy more boats and safety equipment. The club is appealing for people who have canoes that they no longer use. Call 01865 727388.
