The famous Britannia Coconut Morris Men from Bacup in Lancashire are guest dancers at the annual Mayor of Ock Street election and celebrations in Abingdon this Saturday (June 23).
The dancers have blackened faces and wear white skirts and black breeches. They are led by the Whiffler, a man whose job is to drive away bad weather and ill fortune.
Each of the eight dancers wears small wooden discs fastened to their hands, knees and belts. These take the place of bells worn by other Morris dancers.
There are four candidates for this year's Mayor of Ock Street election: the current Mayor Stuart Jackson, Lesley Argyle, Rodney James and Roger Cox, all members of the Abingdon Morris Dancers. Ock Street residents are eligible to vote.
