Oxford'S streets are now covered by 21 cameras after its closed circuit television scheme was extended.

Two new CCTV cameras cover Park End Street and a two more survey Worcester Street South.

Since the first cameras were introduced in May 1999, there have been a total of 659 arrests directly attributed to CCTV images beamed to St Aldate's Police Station. Atmosphere, the Alliance to Make Oxford A Safer Place, which is a crime reduction partnership involving the city council, police, business and others, made a successful funding bid for the scheme to the Home Office.

The new cameras have also been partly funded by Luminaire Leisure, owners of the Park End Club and Chicago Rock Cafe.

David White, CCTV manager for Thames Valley Police, said: "We have long awaited these cameras to achieve our original plans in that area. They will be an extremely useful addition to our CCTV system, providing valuable evidence to the police and help with a range of community safety issues."
