Transport planners are being urged to consider widening part of Marcham Road in Abingdon's transport strategy, which starts this autumn.

The town council is sending its views on the strategy to a steering group, which will co-ordinate opinions as the scheme is introduced over the next ten to 15 years.

Councillors have told the group that the section of Marcham Road from the A34 to Colwell Drive must be made into a dual carriageway to ease traffic jams. The council says that improved access to the A34 at Lodge Hill and Drayton should be agreed with the Highways Agency.

Other ideas include re-designing bus stops to reduce congestion in the High Street and Stratton Way, and ensuring that the new strategy includes housing developments such as the Maltings site in the Vineyard.

The council also supports a plan for a pelican crossing in Wootton Road near the John Mason School but is opposed to a cycle and pedestrian crossing in Drayton Road/Preston Road.

The county council has already earmarked £330,000 for early improvements starting in the autumn.
