Veteran Tim Hughes made light of testing conditions to finish fourth in the Bourton-on-the-Water 15-mile road race on Saturday.

The challenging, hilly Cotswold course, which included two climbs of the steep road up to Rissington, was made harder by the humid conditions, but caused few problems for the White Horse Harrier, who breezed round in 1 hr 27 mins 11secs.

Witney Roadrunner Tony Lock and Woodstock Harrier Bryan Vaughan battled it out for fifth and sixth spots, with Lock coming out on top in a personal best time of 1.28.55 against Vaughan's 1.29.17.

The men's team competition was also a tight affair, which Woodstock won through the efforts of Greg Dell and Tony Hunn, who finished in eighth and nine in 1.31.24 and 1.31.32 respectively.

The race was won by Bourton's Denis Walmsley in 1.23.40.

Sally Pitts, of Witney Roadrunners, was the first women's Vet 35, and the Witney ladies' squad of Pitts, Jeanette Ashton and Kate Worrall won the team prize.
