Thame mayor Don Butler may have to cut short his challenge to sail across the Atlantic in his brother-in-law's yacht.
What should have been a five-week trip looks like lasting more than two months following bad weather.
He will decide whether to carry on when he makes landfall in the Azores later this week.
Cllr Butler has an award-winning furniture-making business in Chinnor with a shop in Thame. His wife, Elaine, has taken over the shop.
She said: "He was dreadfully seasick on the first leg of the trip and was exhausted when he got to the Bahamas.
The mayor is raising money for Freemasons' and furniture makers' charities and for Helen House and Thame community hospital.
