Paul Simpson, from Witney, faces tough competition from 76 professionals, including former Ryder Cup player Paul Way, when he defends his Magnolia Park Classic title this week.

The West Berkshire GC pro landed the title on the way to winning the Southern PGA order of merit last year.

There a strong Oxon contingent, including Frilford Heath's Lee Jackson and former Hinksey Heights assistant Jamie Herbert.

The 54-hole tournament gets under way at the course on the Oxfordshire-Bucks border tomorrow, when 36 holes will be played.

The top 40 players and ties will play the final 18 holes on Saturday. The champion will receive the Magnolia Park Classic Trophy and a cheque for £1,500.

*Studley Wood captains Tim Harris and Jackie Gilson raised more than £7,000 for their chosen charity - the Helen House Hospice for Children - from their captain's day.

Both are appealing for the donation of four tickets to Wimbledon, so that two youngsters in Helen House and their carers can enjoy a day out. Those who can help should contact Harris on 07836 320950 or the Studley Wood club.

*Frilford Heath's Matthew Haddy won both his matches as Berks, Bucks & Oxon Colts drew 6-6 with Hertfordshire in their league match at South Herts GC.

Haddy and Andrew Robson (East Berks) won their foursomes 7 & 6, while the Frilford player went on to beat Paul Coburn 1 up in the singles.

The outcome of the match came down to the last singles when Andrew Sheffield (Brailes) halved with Tom Piggott.

*After landing last week's Oxford City Pro-Am at Southfield with a five-under-par round of 65, Mark Booth, Witney Lakes tour and teaching pro, won the West Berks Pro-Am by one shot.
