Pupils entered their go-kart in a national engineering competition - but it was their teacher who came away with first prize.

St Birinus School, Didcot, was among 17 finalists for the Young Engineers' National Club Awards at Greenwich.

The awards are aimed at showing students just how exciting engineering can be - St Birinus was among 1,460 schools with a Young Engineers Club which submitted entries. St Birinus was represented by five students and the school's engineering club leader, Julian McDermott, who switched to teaching from a career in engineering three years ago.

The pupils were unplaced but Mr McDermott came away with the award for the best supporting club leader.

He said: "I tried to have a very hands-off approach to the work the students did in modifying the go-kart. It was all their own design and effort."
