Thirty drivers were stopped during a police speed check in a 30mph zone in Deddington.

Officers used a radar speed gun near the entrance to the Windmill Centre in Hempton Road from 5pm to 7pm on Tuesday. The fastest speed recorded was 47mph.

Eleven drivers received £60 fixed penalty tickets and the others were given a warning or asked to attend a nearby police mobile exhibition showing the dangers of exceeding the speed limit.

Pc Phil Peters said: "We chose that spot because a lot of people, including many children, go to and from the Windmill Centre at that time and they are put at risk by excess speed.

"Some of the drivers lived locally, but we found many use the road to get across country to places like Cheltenham.

"There will be checks on other roads in north Oxfordshire over the coming weeks, particularly where we have received complaints from local residents and councils."

The check was part of a month-long campaign launched by Thames Valley Police this week targeting drivers who break 30mph limits.
