Nine articulated lorries were needed to bring the stage to South Park, Headington, where Radiohead will headline Oxford's biggest summer rock event.

The arena takes up around half the park, and preparations are well under way for the gig, which will attract 42,000 fans.

Work is expected to be completed by Friday, ready for the five bands on the bill to complete sound checks.

Radiohead are supported by American superstar Beck, Wheatley rockers Supergrass and two new Oxford bands The Rock of Travolta and Hester Thrale. The stage will be 45ft high. There will be 260 toilets on the site and 145 urinals. About 700 people will be working in the arena manning stalls and bars and making sure the gig runs smoothly.

The concert is being jointly promoted by the Zodiac nightclub, Cowley Road, Oxford, and SJM Concerts.

Andy Redhead, event organiser, said work at South Park started last Friday and everything will be dismantled by Wednesday.

He said: "It's been great, really good. The weather has been good for us - and a bit too warm on some days.

"It's a beautiful park and we really like it. We have had a very good working relationship with Oxford City Council and they have been very helpful."

Nick Moorbath, owner of the Zodiac nightclub, said the successful OOMF! (Oxford's Own Millennium Festival) last summer had demonstrated that South Park could be used to stage high-profile events.

Charities, including some from Oxford, which have yet to be named, will benefit from the gig.th a raffle ticket given out as part of a joint promotion by Morrells of Oxford pub company, Scottish Courage and lastminute.com.
