Charity fundraisers fear they could lose vital cash donations unless they find free office space to continue their work in Oxfordshire.

Workers at the county branch of Macmillan Cancer Relief have been told they have six weeks to move out of their present base, at the former Bradford and Bingley office in Kidlington.

The building society's branch in Oxford Road played host to the fundraisers for five years, but has closed as part of a national economy programme.

Macmillan fundraising manager Anne Cooper said: "Bradford and Bingley, who have been very generous, told us about the closure in March, but couldn't tell us when we would have to leave.

"Unfortunately, now we've been told and we have until the middle of August to find somewhere new, otherwise we will be on the streets.

"Loads of volunteers know where we are and if we have to move far we wouldn't see them any more. It's a possibility that donations would falter because people relate to local causes and they might not do that any more."

Ms Cooper is now appealing to businesses to offer her free office space, so she can stay within Oxfordshire's boundaries.

If no-one is prepared to help, she and her staff will be forced to share the Buckinghamshire branch office, in Wendover.

Firms could offer their help as sponsorship for Macmillan's Banbury Nurse Appeal, which aims to raise £300,000 in two years, to fund a palliative care nurse to look after patients suffering from cancer.

As well as the appeal - which since December has raised £80,000 - Macmillan's Oxfordshire branch also distributes patient grants across the county and has an information and education service.

Ms Cooper said: "We just need an office and the only way we can do this is if someone is prepared to give us the space for two or three years. Free accommodation helps us keep our costs down."
