The Amber Spy Glass - the third part of Oxford author Phillip Pullman's best-selling trilogy - was voted best book in the annual Carnegie Medal Children's Fiction competition held at Abingdon School.
Gaynor CooperMore than 100 pupils aged 11 to 13 from seven local schools took part in the forum. Pupils from Abingdon School, Fitzharry's, Larkmead, John Mason, Our Lady's Convent, SS Helen and Katharine's and Didcot Girls' School read the eight short-listed titles at the same time as the judging panel.
The pupils were split into groups to discuss the books they read. They made written comments and then presented their conclusions to each other and the judges. The judges then announced the winning book on the basis of the pupils' comments.
Lindsay Dale, 13, from John Mason School, won the individual prize for her presentation and group prizes were also presented by the judges.
Abingdon School librarian Gaynor Cooper, pictured, said: "It was an outstanding event. There was a buzz of excitement with children exchanging
