A former semi-professional footballer has been jailed for 21 months for assault and burglary.

Wayne Jones, 27, of Speedwell Street, Oxford, admitted two counts of burglary and one of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Yesterday, Oxford Crown Court was told Jones used to play for former Vauxhall Conference side Aylesbury United.

Nadia Chbat, prosecuting, said Jones knocked on the door of a house in Outram Road, Cowley, on July 28 last year.

Stewart Crosby opened the door with towel around his waist.

Jones asked if there was a party at the house and then pushed past Mr Crosby.

A quantity of cannabis was stolen by Jones from the property.

On August 3, Jones went to flats in Cowley Road and asked to use the toilet.

Richard Burrows reluctantly allowed him in, but Jones grabbed £20 from a money tin.

Mr Burrows tried to stop Jones but he was assaulted.

Paul Testar, defending, said his client - who had been addicted to crack cocaine - was currently serving time in prison and was acting as a 'drugs mentor' to new prisoners to warn them of the dangers of addiction.

Mr Testar said: "He wants to become involved in drugs counselling when he leaves prison."
