Lorna, married with three children is bored with her summer on the beach in 1930s New Zealand.

When the handsome James gets the locals and the Maoris involved in his amateur western film, Lust in the Dust, she is briefly consumed with lust for James. But it is her friend Bella who stuns the assembled beach gathering with her liaison with the young Maori Tam. The story is told through the eyes of Lorna and her young daughter Ann.
