An 80-year-old Dorchester man has completed a ten-mile charity walk.
After rigorous training, including three gym-sessions a week, Richard Hotopf walked from Abingdon to his home to raise money for the National Autistic Society. The walk, sponsored by villagers, family and friends, is set to raise £3,000.
Richard HotopfMr Hotopf, of High Street, was accompanied by seven friends, including Canon John Crowe, of Dorchester Abbey. The route took them along the Thames Path from Rye Farm, down Culham Reach and through Clifton Hampden.
Mr Hotopf, who celebrated his 80th birthday on Wednesday, had to contend with heavy rain at the half-way stage on Culham Reach.
He said: "Fortunately, I had arranged for what I call the banana wagon to meet us at Clifton Hampden. We changed our shoes and socks, and then we carried on."
Canon Crowe said: "Richard has always been very fit.
"He has set a marvellous example for others."
