Oxford Cheetahs' skipper Steve Johnston's bid to secure a place in next year's Grand Prix series failed miserably in the Inter-continental final at Vastervik in Sweden on Saturday.
The Aussie could muster only four points and failed to gain a top-six place which would have taken him forward to the Grand Prix Challenge in October.
The winner was Belle Vue's Finnish star Kaj Laukkanen, who took the title after a run-off with English ace Scott Nicholls. Both scored 12 points ahead of third placed Coventry and Swedish rider Andreas Jonsson.
Also qualifying was Premier League surprise package Sean Wilson, Jason Lyons and Lars Gunnestad, while Sam Ermolenko won a four-man run-off for the reserve berth.
How they finished: 1 K Laukkanen 12, 2 S Nicholls 12, 3 A Jonsson 11, S Wilson 10, J Lyons 9, L Gunnestad 9 (all qualified), S Ermolenko 8 (res), S Andersson 8, H Clausen 8, G Havelock 8, S Robson 6, N Karlsson 5, J Cook 4, J Jensen 4, S Johnston 4, K Nieminen 2.
