It appears that zander have found their way into the Thames.

The Environment Agency have revealed that a three-inch zander was discovered when a fish survey demonstration was carried out for primary school teachers on Teddington Lock Island, near London.

It is the first time a zander had been recorded in a survey and brings the total number of different species found in the Thames to 119.

How the species, which is alien to the Thames and is mainly found in Norfolk rivers, came to reach the river remains a mystery.

Fisheries officer Steve Colclough said: "We are not sure how the zander came to be in the upper tidal Thames.

"It may have entered naturally through fresh water streams from stocked locations. We hope that anglers will help us gather more information by reporting any sightings or captures to the Environment Agency."

There have been fears in the past that zander can seriously damage fish stocks, but these have proved unfounded and I don't feel anglers need be too concerned.

*Sam Richards, from Leamington Spa, caught a personal best carp from Manor Lake on the Shimano Linear complex at Stanton Harcourt.

The 15-year-old's fish, which weighed in at 25lb 12ozs, was caught from the surface on a Chum Mixer.

*Prospects for September at Lechlade Trout Fishery are promising.

One of the best months of the year as the weather gets cooler and the days start drawing in, fish that have sulked for the summer months start laying down food for the winter.

Fry imitations can be deadly and daddy longlegs, now in profusion, always work well.
