The switchboard of the company behind Banbury FM has been jammed with callers after the Oxford Mail reported that the town may get its own radio station.

Hundreds of people wanted details of plans for round-the-clock broadcasting from the town.

The station will begin a month of test broadcasting on September 23 on 106.4FM. If successful, a permanent licence could be granted and Banbury FM could be on-air full-time within two years.

Berkshire-based Milestone Radio, who run Kick FM in Newbury and Kestrel FM in Basingstoke, is funding the test broadcast in Banbury.

Project manager Daniel Cass said: "We have been inundated with calls from members of the public expressing support and offering ideas. We want local people to let us know what they want to hear."

Adderbury's Andy Green, a former Fox FM presenter, will be a mainstay of Banbury FM.

Grahame Handley, chief executive of Cherwell District Council, said: "Banbury seems to be on the edge of other broadcasting areas. A radio station broadcasting in north Oxfordshire would be very welcome."

Sharon Hickson, of Claydon, said: "Its about time north Oxfordshire had its own radio station - something which is relevant to life here. I'll certainly be listening."

Janet Smith, of Deddington, added: "A Banbury-based radio station will keep the family up to date with everything going on around here, as opposed to hearing about Abingdon, Witney, or Oxford."

Stewart Green, programme controller at Radio Horton, Banbury's hospital broadcasting station, said: "I'm really excited about Banbury FM and Radio Horton working together."
