A speed crackdown that gave drivers the option of education rather than a fine was so successful it could be repeated.

Eighty-four motorists were caught going over the limit in 30mph and 40mph zones in Deddington, Lower Heyford and Middle Barton by officers with mobile speed traps earlier this month.

Sixty-two of the offenders who were just over the speed limit were, for the first time, offered the chance to have their tickets revoked if they attended a speed awareness evening. Those severely flouting the restrictions were not given the option.

The evening, which included a presentation by the county council's chief road safety officer, Ian Harris, was held last week at Kirtlington Village Hall, near Bicester.

Fifty-nine of the 62 offered the opportunity turned up, including one driver from Surrey and another from Herefordshire, prompting traffic officers to declare it a success.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: "All of those turning up were asked to fill out a questionnaire about the evening and whether it was worthwhile, and most of the feedback was pretty positive.

"I think it is a strong possibility we will do something similar again."

The checks were targeted at collision hotspots and roads where residents have made complaints about speeding motorists.
