More than 100 cyclists were fined for riding dangerously in a month-long clampdown by Oxford police last year.

Police went out every night in the city centre during November to clamp down on cyclists riding on pavements and without lights, targeting hotspots including Cornmarket, Queen Street, George Street and St Giles.

The move followed complaints from the public that cyclists were flouting the law and endangering safety.

Those caught were given £30 fixed penalty tickets - including 15 caught in one swoop in the High Street on November 9. Following the campaign, police chiefs said anyone seen cycling in pedestrian-only Cornmarket and Queen Street would receive a ticket on the spot.

A cyclist in pedestrian-only Cornmarket Insp Keith Henderson, head of the city centre unit, said at the time of the crackdown: "To be fair, the majority of people seem to be getting the message, but there's some showing complete disregard for their own safety and wilful disregard of the law.

"But we are determined to get the safety message across, so all road users can see cyclists coming. My officers are mainly catching younger people, but some are in their 40s, which is ridiculous. The message is be safe or you'll get a ticket."

Insp Henderson said his officers were also targeting cyclists who rode through red traffic lights, putting themselves and others in danger.

*Police in Kidlington launched a crackdown on cyclists riding on pavements in August last year after Tony Burford, 68, was hit by a young cyclist. Mr Burford, of Evans Lane, Kidlington, suffered severe bruising.
