Two classic MGs will make a nostalgic pilgrimage to their home town of Abingdon on Saturday, en route to the world's biggest historic motor racing event.

The cars will be among dozens of classic vehicles passing through the area on their way to Northamptonshire for the Silverstone RetroRun.

The vehicles will start their journey at Beaconsfield and, instead of using the M40 for the whole route, will make a detour via Abingdon.

They will be seen making their way along the A415 through Abingdon, Marcham, Frilford and Kingston Bagpuize from about 9am on Saturday.

Other makes and models to look for include classic Jaguars and Triumphs, a Ferrari Mondial, an Aston Martin DB6 and a vintage Rolls-Royce.

On arrival at Silverstone, the Beaconsfield brigade will join up with RetroRunners from four other starting points in the country to form an impressive collection of motoring history.

Their arrival will be one of the highlights of what is said to be the world's largest and most nostalgic motor racing event - the Silverstone Historic Festival - on Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday.

A spokesman for the organisers, Richard Barnett, said: "It promises to be a great sight seeing all these old cars travelling along the roads of Oxfordshire -the drivers will enjoy getting off the motorway and getting on to real roads! It's a gesture for the old MGs to pass through the town of their origins."
