About 100 footballers took to the pitch in memory of a 19-year-old victim of drink-driving.

Players from Wantage and Grove joined the first Campaign Against Drink Driving football tournament on Sunday. The event was organised by Jane Evason, of Evenlode Close, Wantage, whose son Gareth was killed by a drink-driver three years ago.

Mrs Evason, who is the secretary of the Wantage-based national pressure group, staged the five-a-side contest on Grove's Wasbrough Field recreation area to raise cash and spread her 'Zero Tolerance' message.

Many people also saw the event as an opportunity to pay tribute to the fun-loving soccer fan, who was hit by a driver who was three times over the legal limit.

Mrs Evason said she had been startled by the response from her son's former friends.

She added: "We didn't do it specifically for Gareth, but to raise funds for the campaign, as we are desperate for money.

"There were lots of Gareth's friends and people who knew him. We might now make it an on-going thing."

The tournament attracted teams from many local pubs. Prizes were donated by local companies, while Bass Breweries donated a number of shirts. Among the players was Gareth's 21-year-old brother Neil.

Mrs Evason added: "It still hurts a lot, but we need to make people aware of the campaign against drink driving."
