Mark Wright says he may mix up his team for tonight's Worthington Cup tie with Gillingham at The Kassam Stadium - because his priority has to be the league.

However, he allayed fears some fans might have had that he might not be treating this evening's first-round tie seriously by insisting: "I want to win every game, and we want to win this one.

"It's great to have cup games, but for us, the league is more important than the cups and we could have done with this particular tie being a month down the line.

Phil Gray"We've played two games and should have got four points. We got a very good away point at Swansea, and I don't think too many sides will get that at the Vetch this season, and we should have beaten Rochdale, but didn't take our chances.

"Sometimes, to get away from the league is a bonus, but I don't feel that way right now. Nevertheless, I still want to win this game.

"People who haven't been playing need match fitness and this may be an opportunity to help one or two get that."

So Wright may be looking at making two or three changes, without significantly weakening the side.

Options could include using Simon King on the left flank, bringing Paul Tait back into midfield or trying one of either Phil Gray or Manny Omoyinmi up front.

A switch from 3-4-3 back to 3-5-2 is also possible because that formation worked well against another first division side, Crystal Palace, in pre-season.

"Palace have gone on and won their first two games, so that shows how well we did that day," Wright added. "But we'll take nothing for granted."

Gillingham claim to be notoriously slow starters but they are out of the blocks very quickly this season, thrashing Preston 5-0 and then holding Sheffield United to a goalless draw at Bramall Lane.

That leaves them with the impressive record of four points, two clean sheets and five goals to the good.

Player-manager Andy Hessenthaler has last season's top scorer Marlow King available again, following his two-match suspension, but after the way Gills have started, King looks like having to make do with a place on the bench.

Gillingham, who were knocked out of the Worthington Cup by Manchester City last season - Oxford bowed out to Wolves - have two former Swindon Town players in their line-up in midfielder Ty Gooden and striker Iffy Onoura.

Oxford Utd: (from) McCaldon, Knight, Guyett, Bolland, Hatswell, Stockley, Savage, Thomas, Tait, Beauchamp, Ricketts, Scott, Brooks, Gray, Omoyinmi, Whitehead, King, Richardson, Folland.

Gillingham: (probable) Bartram, Ashby, Pennock, Hope, Patterson, Smith, Browning, Gooden, Edge, Onoura, Ipoua. Subs: Hessenthaler, Perpetuini, Saunders, Brown, Shaw.
