More CCTV cameras are to be installed in Oxford city centre following a successful bid for Government funding.
The Home Office grant of £263,000 will take the total number of cameras in the city to 33.
There have been 700 arrests as a direct result of camera surveillance since CCTV was first introduced in Oxford in 1999.
The grant will fund more camera coverage in Friar's Entry, Gloucester Street, Victoria Court, Gloucester Green bus station, St Ebbe's, Penny Farthing Lane, Roger Bacon Lane, and Turn Again Lane.
Supt Keith Ringsell, of Oxford police, said: "The cameras will never replace policing, but they do allow us to concentrate our resources while complementing the policing we do on the street."
