An elderly couple had to be cut from the wreckage of their car following a crash involving two lorries.
They were taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, after the front of their Toyota was crushed beneath a skip lorry on Wednesday on the A44 at Glympton, between Woodstock and Enstone.
The woman was described as being in a "serious condition" in intensive care. Her husband, who suffered minor injuries, was described as "stable".
The stretch of road was not reopened until mid-afternoon.
A Volvo articulated lorry also involved in the crash had minor damage.
Assistant divisional officer Nigel Robinson of Oxfordshire fire service said the male passenger was cut out the car within 15 to 20 minutes of the service arriving. The female driver was in the car for 90 minutes.
Firefighters used special heavy lifting airbags to lift the skip lorry and winched the car from underneath it, before cutting the woman free.
Mr Robinson said: "It was an awkward extraction because the front of the car was so far underneath the lorry. The teamwork there between the three emergency services - police, fire and ambulance - was first class."
Anyone with information about the accident should contact Bicester traffic police on 01869 364892.
