Firefighters have praised the quick thinking of a man who tackled a small fire and prevented it spreading to an annex containing petrol.
Fire crews were called just before 7.30pm on Sunday to a fire at Kidlington Football Club in Yarnton Road.
On arrival, firefighters discovered that club member Stuart Palmer, of Flatford Place, Kidlington, had used an extinguisher to prevent the fire causing extensive damage to a wooden annex attached to the side of the clubhouse. The fire started after plastic sheeting which was lining the annex walls was deliberately set alight and spread to the roof.
The annex housed the club's lawnmowers and about ten litres of petrol.
A spokesman for Oxfordshire County Council fire service said: "Without Mr Palmer's quick thinking, the clubhouse could have suffered extensive damage."
