Police are calling on people with information about vandalism to contact them in a bid to clamp down on the damage being done by city thugs.

The appeal follows the attack at Barton, and after a pensioner and her grandson were left shocked when teenagers hurled stones at the windows of her home.

Mrs Winifred Lamont, 67, said her grandson Kane, six, could have been severely injured on Saturday, when vandals pelted her house, in Palmer Road, Wood Farm, Oxford.

The family was celebrating England's win against Germany, when the front window was left cracked as large stones hailed down on it.

Mrs Lamont said: "We were sat in our front room and stones just shot through my front window. It really shook us up.

"The football had just finished and suddenly it was like a bomb going off. It shook the house and great big chunks of stone were left all over the garden.

"Kane was staying with me for the weekend and he could have ended up at the John Radcliffe."

A police spokesman said: "We always encourage people to come forward. We do everything we can and always treat these incidents very seriously, but we rely on other people to help us with information.

"There isn't an upsurge in vandalism, but there's always a constant problem. If people are vigilant and help us to identify those responsible, then we can deal with the situation.

"It's usually a small number of offenders and if we can find them, then vandalism could be reduced dramatically."
