If it were not for a rain-off last Friday against old rivals Coventry, JT/Fox Oxford Cheetahs could now be parading the Sky Sports Elite League trophy through the city's streets.
The postponement means Cheetahs, who continued their winning ways with victories at Eastbourne on Saturday and Belle Vue on Monday, must wait a little longer to try and clinch the title. But surely nothing can stop them now.
The thrilling 51-41 win at Eastbourne gave the team the shot in the arm that they needed.
It was a terrific start to September, and provided Cheetahs with fresh impetus following a shaky August.
The matches in the middle of last month certainly kept the title race wide open, leaving Sky Sports rubbing their hands with glee.
Maybe it is just me, but I don't remember many of the championships going this close to the wire?
Now Cheetahs need just three more Elite League points to clinch the title - and there are still three matches to do it. But when will they do it?
Ipswich away next Thursday is not going to be an easy task, as Scott Nicholls has returned to the team and is scoring points as freely now as before his injury.
Oxford have also not managed a win in Suffolk for many years and that will give the Witches a huge psychological advantage. What chance the bonus point?
It was 46-44 in Oxford's favour when the two teams met at Sandy Lane.
Cheetahs must then travel to Ipswich again, although I think on this occasion a bonus point is much more likely. Oxford were certainly on something special when the Witches came for the B fixture, winning by a margin of 28 points!
Coventry at home is always going to be a difficult fixture, but I believe Oxford are by far the better team and should be confident of scoring the necessary 48 points to secure a win and the bonus point.
Quite when this meeting will take place is something of a mystery, although details may be released by the weekend.
One thing is for sure, the Oxford fans have really been getting behind the Cheetahs this year.
And I believe that whenever the Coventry match is rearranged, Sandy Lane will witness one of its biggest crowds ever to see Oxford lift that trophy.
