A group of nine politicians is to have sweeping powers over education, transport and social services in Oxfordshire after the county council voted to radically reform its policy-making body.

At a meeting on Tuesday, members voted to replace the committee system with a cabinet system and leader, in accordance with Government legislation.

The decision was taken reluctantly by many members who objected to being told, by Westminster, how to run the council.

A coalition of five Conservatives and four Liberal Democrats will form the cabinet with executive powers.

The remaining 61 members will hold the cabinet to account and Labour members will chair the five scrutiny committees.

The new administration takes over on November 5.
