Children arriving at an Oxford pre-school on their first day were faced with broken glass caused by vandalism.

Youths have been blamed for the destruction at Headington Community Centre, Gladstone Road, where the The Cherry Tree pre-school group meets.

In the latest attack, vandals broke guide-rails for use by the disabledentering the centre and threw stones at a milk crate on the centre's roof, breaking a window and showering an indoor sandpit with glass.

The damage greeted children as they arrived for their first day back on Wednesday.

The pre-school's chairman, Tanya Field, blamed the vandalism on gangs of young teenagers. She said the "mindless" vandalism was due to a lack of leisure facilities in the area, which led to boredom. "It is incredibly frustrating," she said.

Mrs Field said people were too afraid of reprisals to report the youths.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said an area beat officer would visit the pre-school.
