Villagers near Thame are being asked if they want to hear their church bells ring out again.
If they do, they will have to dig deep into their pockets for the privilege.
The present condition of the bells in the church of St Mary Magdalene in Shabbington, means they cannot be rung.
Bellfounders White's of Appleton say £50,000 is needed for their restoration.
Now a letter is being sent to every house in the village to see if residents want the bells and will help raise the money.
Organiser Anthea Robson said: "We cannot embark on this huge project without people's support. It needs the serious commitment of a significant number of people."
