Oxford City have signed a player once valued at £500,000 - former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder David Billington.
The Oxford-born player, 21, who lives in Littlemore, goes straight into the side for Saturday's trip to Ryman League Division 1 leaders Bognor Regis.
He played five games for Peterborough United before the Owls paid £500,000 for him in April 1997.
But a cruciate knee injury meant he never appeared for Wednesday and he was forced to retire from the full-time professional game in February at just 20.
City boss Paul Lee said: "We are delighted to sign David. This is an opportunity for him to start playing again."
