A man was pushed into the River Thames by two robbers who took his bicycle.

The 30-year-old was attacked as he rode along the towpath at Friars Wharf, Oxford.

He went under the water and was pulled along by the current, but managed to grab hold of weeds and pull himself out. He saw the robbers head off in the direction of Abingdon Road, one riding his red and silver Raleigh Max bike. He was left shaken but unhurt.

A police spokesman said: "He had a very lucky escape. The river is very cold at this time of year."

His two assailants were both black or Asian and in their early 20s. Any witnesses to the attack, at 9pm on Wednesday, are asked to contact Det Con Justin Gosling at Oxford CID on 01865 266333.
