The people of east Oxford gave Andrew Smith his fourth term as their MP.
Mr Smith was first elected as Labour MP for the constituency in 1987 and, at 2.30am today in Oxford Town Hall, he was declared the winner again.
Just before 3am, Mr Smith was delighted to learn that Labour had been declared the General Election winners.
Andrew Smith and his wife Val The Liberal Democrat candidate Steve Goddard was his nearest challenger.
Mr Smith, who lives in Blackbird Leys, said he was pleased to be able to continue doing the job he loved for the people of Oxford East.
He added: "General elections are a genuine expression of confidence in the values and competence of government and our majority here and across the country is a resounding vote of confidence in the Labour Party." He insisted he would continue to loyally serve his constituents and would not neglect them by spending all his time on Cabinet duty.
Steve Goddard said he was pleased with the number of votes that had been achieved to force the Conservatives in to third place. They came second last time.
John Lister, the Socialist Alliance candidate, scored 708 votes, but his speech was met with cheers as he warned Andrew Smith that using a private finance initiative to move the Radcliffe Infirmary to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Headington would "come back to haunt" the Labour Government.
