People walking through Abingdon were transported back in time when scenes from the town's monastic past were re-enacted in the streets.

A masked actor in the procession Pupils from Abingdon's three secondary schools took part in a procession on Friday, which was the finale of a two-week arts project.

The children from Fitzharrys, John Mason and Larkmead schools joined forces with performers and visual artists from Trading Faces Theatre Company to produce an exhibition of giant puppet sculptures and three-dimensional paintings inspired by medieval art. The exhibition was displayed at St Helen's Church.

On their way to the Market Square, children dressed in period costumes, stopped to perform scenes from the town's history. In the square they re-enacted events from the time when the town's Abbey was the richest and largest in England.

The three schools are currently working on a joint bid to be granted specialist art and technology status by the government. If the bid is successful, the schools will get an extra £1m.
