Sculptures, paintings and photographs worth thousands of pounds are to be auctioned at Sotheby's in London to help Oxford's Museum of Modern Art fulfil its ambition to scrap admission charges.

The Pembroke Street museum is to benefit from the sale of 40 works by several key 20th century artists. It is hoped the sale will raise up to £80,000.

The works, donated by the artists and various galleries, will go under the hammer at 10.30am on Wednesday, October 3.

Donations include works by Sir Anthony Caro, Barry Flanagan, Cecil Beaton, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sol Le Witt and Roy Lichtenstein.

The cash raised from the sale will go to MOMA's endowment fund and is be used to support a programme of exhibitions and educational events at the museum in Pembroke Street, Oxford.

Director Andrew Nairne said: "We are constantly finding ways to enable more people to appreciate and enjoy modern and contemporary art.

"Our current objective is to abolish our entrance charge.

"The proceeds of this sale will help us achieve it."
