The United States Grand Prix proved a tough event for Oxfordshire's Grand Prix teams with none of the drivers finishing in the points.
The Grove-based BMW Williams F1team were bitterly disappointed with both Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher retiring within two laps of each other.
First to go was Schumacher when he spun off on lap 36 and then a suspected hydraulic problem caused Montoya to park his car at the side of the track.
Leafield-based Orange Arrows driver Enrique Bernoldi finished in 13th position after a tough race. Teammate, Jos Verstappen, retired on lap 45 with an engine problem after running strongly in 13th position during the first half of the race.
Jordan's Jarno Trulli initially finished fourth, but was booted out of the official result when the skid block under his car failed the post-race inspection, though Jordan appealed the decision.
Jaguar's Eddie Irvine was promoted to fourth, Sauber's Nick Heidfeld finished fifth, while Jean Alesi - in the 200th race of his career - picked up a point in the other Jordan. Giancarlo Fisichella was seventh for Enstone's Benetton-Renault team and Jenson Button was eighth.
The result of the appeal will have an effect on the minor places in the constructors' standings involving Jordan, BAR, Benetton and Jaguar which could be worth millions of pounds.
Out in front, Mika Hakkinen triumphed by 12 seconds from Ferrari's world champion Michael Schumacher, despite being demoted two places on the grid to fourth after ignoring a red light at the pit-exit during the morning warm-up.
But the Monaco-based racer, whose only other victory this season was in Britain, gradually moved his way into the lead of the 73-lap race via pit-stop strategy and never came under threat once he moved in front.
