A grant of £52,000 for a new children's play park in Sutton Courtenay brings to an end a 20-year campaign.

The grant has been approved by the Trust for Oxfordshire's Environment and comes from the environment fund of aggregate company Hanson through its landfill tax credits.

A small area of land near the Sutton Courtenay CofE Primary School is to be leased from Landsdown Estates, the owner of Milton Park, and will be landscaped and fitted with play equipment.

The chairman of Sutton Courtenay Parish Council, John Francis, said: "We're very happy that at last we can get on building this project, which has been discussed for some years.

"We have planning permission but now we have to finalise details over the lease of the land and talk to the county council about access from the school. If all goes to plan, the play park should be ready for next summer."

County, district and parish councillor Margaret MacKenzie said: "I'm delighted. This has been a long campaign. I first raised it 20 years ago.

"At long last the children of the village will have somewhere to play in safety."

Hanson Aggregates spokesman David Harding said: "We have had long associations with the area and are delighted that the scheme has eventually received funding.

"We're at the heart of the area and we think it's important to give something back to the community."
