Hundreds of peace protesters gathered in the centre of Oxford last night (Monday) to signal their opposition to the bombing strikes against Afghanistan.
The five-minute vigil at Carfax Tower was organised by the Oxford for Peace group, which has collected 1,700 signatures over the past week from peace protesters calling on the American and British governments to seek a non-military solution to the international crisis.
Later a large crowd of pacifists marched towards Radcliffe Square in protest against what they describe as an "unjust war."
Before the vigil, one of the organisers, Richard Thompson, explained their stance: "We believe that military strikes in response to the terrorist attack of Tuesday, September 11, will prove to be counter-productive to true peace and security."
Anti-war activists also gathered in the Market Place in Faringdon, where they plan to hold nightly vigils for as long as the bombing in Afghanistan continues.
