WITNEY professional Grant Conquest gained a major scalp when he beat Willie Thorne 5-3 in the last 32 of the first Challenge Tour event of the season at Manhattan Snooker Club in Harrogate.

The victory over the former world No 7 represents one of the highlights of the 25-year-old's career.

However, it's probably not his biggest win as last year Conquest beat Fergal O'Brien 5-4 in the John Smiths tournament at Livepool.

Conquest was continuing his challenge in Harrogate today in the last 16 against the winner of Michael Wild and Simon Bedford.

In the earlier rounds, Conquest was in sparkling form to record 4-1 wins over Lee Johnson, Suppachai Wiwattrang and Craig MacGillivray. Wiwattrang had earlier proved too strong for Thame's Lee Richardson, who crashed to a 4-1 defeat in the first round.

The challenge tours are a qualifying competition for players who are trying to get into the top 128 and play in the main tour in 2002 and 2003.
