A man arrested for being drunk and incapable died less than 24 hours later after suffering a brain haemorrhage in a fall.

Man Chung Cheung, of High Street, Witney, was arrested in west London for being drunk and incapable, but was dead within 24 hours.

Mr Cheung, 50, had a history of alcohol problems, but his brother and manager, Peter Cheung, said he only drank after visiting his ex-wife. They had divorced three months earlier.

St Pancras Coroner's Court heard Mr Cheung last saw her on June 16 -- three days before road sweeper Brendon McIlmale watched him walking into the road as he crossed a London bridge.

Mr McIlmale said: "He was stumbling about in the middle of the road. As he got onto the footpath he had fallen back.

"He hit the wall very, very hard and then hit the pavement."

Police and paramedics were called.

Ambulance technician Ray Stanners said he only found a graze after initially examining Mr Cheung, and treated him for this injury.

Pc Colin Walker said he could not find any obvious injuries when he arrested Mr Cheung.

But when the man's legs started to shake he realised there was something wrong, and called the paramedics back.

Mr Cheung was admitted to casualty with heavy bleeding between his skull and brain.

He was transferred to the National Hospital for Neurology, but failed to improve after an operation and died the next day.

Pathologist Dr Diana Cox said Mr Cheung's blood alcohol level had been three times over the legal drink driving limit.

She gave the cause of death as an acute brain haemorrhage.

Coroner Dr Susan Hungerford said: "The evidence is entirely consistent with a fall due to the effects of alcohol consumed."

Recording a verdict of accidental death, Dr Hungerford said detecting Mr Cheung's condition earlier would have made no difference.
