CREDIT card thieves are phoning their victims claiming to be bank and building society officials to try to get their PIN numbers.
Police are warning cardholders to be careful after two incidents last week.
In the first attempt, a purse was stolen from offices in Overthorpe Road, Banbury. Later the owner received a call from a man saying he was Mr Hunter of the Nationwide Building Society.
He asked for the woman's PIN number, saying someone had tried to get money from her account and he was making a security check.
On the same day, a woman left her purse in a town shop. Later a Mr Hunter, this time saying he was from NatWest, rang and used the same story.
Police spokesman David Campbell said: "The cards are worthless to thieves without the PIN number. No-one from a company or the police would ever ask for a number in these circumstances. The number should never be revealed over the telephone."
