FA Carlsberg Vase: Abingdon Tn 1, Peaceaven & Telscombe 0
Abingdon Town forgot about their troubles in Ryman League Division 3 with a well-deserved win over Sussex League high-fliers Peacehaven, courtesy of a Paul Sherwood goal midway through the second half.
It was Peacehaven, on an unbeaten run of seven games, who started brightest, and after only four minutes went close through Lockhart and Allen.
With the midfield looking better balanced, Town were able to pass the ball around on the good surface, and after 24 minutes Roger Charles broke through, only to see his shot blocked by a visiting defender.
After 43 minutes, Jon Muttock was unlucky when, following a Tristan Didcock free kick, his header narrowly cleared the Peacehaven bar.
After the interval Town began to dominate possession, but were grateful to keeper Mickey Torres who did brilliantly to turn aside a superb strike from Pattenden.
On 72 minutes, Town at last made the breakthrough, after good work from Thomas allowed Sherwood to fire home, his shot clipping off a defender. It was Peacehaven though, who had the best chance in the 88th minute, but Pattenden shot wide after beating the onrushing Torres. Despite nine minutes of injury time added on by referee it was for once to be Abingdon's day.
**Abingdon Tn: Torres, Thomas, Burden, Beauchamp, Muttock, Morgan, Didcock, Charles, Sherwood, Gardner (Oram 83), Scanes (Care 76).
