The effects of Oxford's transformation into a 24-hour city are being examined by councillors.
At yesterday's meeting of the city council's overview and scrutiny environment committee, they agreed to look at how late licensing is affecting residents.
Councillors acknowledge the gradual extension of licensing hours in city centre areas, including George Street, is leading to Oxford becoming a 24-hour city. But they want safeguards in place to make sure that all sections of the community, including the elderly, feel safe.
Labour councillor Maureen Christian said: "At the same time as promoting a lively, vibrant city centre, we need to ensure that women and the elderly feel safe late at night."
Council officers will speak to colleagues from other cities where measures have been taken.
