Thames Valley Police's drugs co-ordinator has welcomed Government proposals to lower the penalties for possessing cannabis.
However, Det Insp Ian Robinson warned officers would continue to target dealers.
Earlier this week, the Home Secretary, David Blunkett, announced proposals to downgrade cannabis from a Class B to a Class C drug.
Class C status will mean anyone stopped on the street and found in possession of cannabis will not be arrested, although the drug can be seized.
Det Insp Robinson said: "It will mean we cannot arrest people for possession of cannabis, although we will still arrest dealers and people with intent to supply.
"However, possession of cannabis is a criminal offence."
