Abingdon Tn 1, Witham Tn 1
Abingdon Town were left wondering why they are still seeking their first league win of their Ryman League Division 3 campaign after dominating long periods of the game.
But they failed to find a second killer goal, before the visitors came back strongly and might even have won it late on.
Town played well with manager Alan Thorne picking a 4-4-2 formation and the midfield were noticeably stronger because of this, although Roger Charles had to go off in only the second minute with a nasty head injury.
Abingdon put together some neat approach play in the first period, with Ben Border on the left looking particularly lively, but it was from the other flank that Town almost took the lead on 17 minutes, when Danny Morgan's excellent cross was met by John Gardner only for keeper Dean Mahoney to make a good save.
On 32 minutes, Town keeper Mickey Torres came to the rescue with a double save, first parrying Neil Grice's free-kick before somehow blocking Paul Sammons' follow-up from six yards.
Abingdon took the lead in the 35th minute, after Border beat the offside trap and crossed for Sherwood to slide home from close range despite the close
attention of his marker.
Just before the break Torres saved from Danny Stanley. In the second period, Town were unlucky when Sherwood had a shot saved, while Gardner hit a blistering shot which cannoned back off the crossbar.
Town needed a second goal but with 15 minutes left Sammons headed home to deny Abingdon that elusive first win. Torres then had to make a good save late on.
