An Oxfordshire referee called off a game because of the abuse he received during a Sunday league game from one spectator.

Mark Franklin was refereeing the Arncott v Morris Motors Reserves game in Morrells Oxford Sunday League Division 3, when an Arncott supporter subjected him to a barrage of abuse.

After 65 minutes, Franklin, who sent off a player from each side earlier in the game for violent conduct, decided he had had enough, with Arncott leading 3-2.

The official, who also referees Lord Jersey and Oxfordshire Senior League games, said: "This supporter kept using foul and abusive language towards me. When I asked him to leave the side of the pitch he refused."

Franklin said he would be sending a report of the game to both the Oxfordshire FA and the league.

Former Arncott secretary, Andrew Cox, revealed that two years ago, the club were warned as to their future conduct after a game had to be abandoned when a fight broke out among the players, ironically when they played Morris Motors under their old name Jericho.

"I was at Sunday's game. It was quite a competitive game, the tackles were flying in but it calmed down by half-time and then it flared again when this guy started on the ref," said Cox.

"The ref asked us to remove him from the ground but that is impossible because it was in a public park.

"This old bloke went right over the top. But we couldn't do anything about it."
