Two brothers attacked the driver of a lorry and threw punches at police officers in a drunken brawl, a Crown Court jury was told.

John Cronin, 29, of Kingsclere Road, Bicester, pleads not guilty to actual bodily harm and assault with intention to resist arrest.

Daniel Cronin, 33, of Bassett Avenue, Bicester, pleads not guilty to common assault. Both men deny a further charge of affray in court on Monday.

Alan Blake, prosecuting, told Oxford Crown Court yesterday that the attack happened at 11pm on March 25 after the defendants left the Ex-Services' Club in Sheep Street, Bicester.

Steven Brand and Paul Bankroft were driving a lorry down High Street to deliver goods to a shop. The defendants and two friends were walking ahead and cut across the vehicle, forcing it to stop.

Mr Blake said when Mr Bankroft asked them to move away, John Cronin replied: "Come on, I'll land you one as well."

Mr Bankroft tried to get out, but John Cronin hit the door of the lorry as he climbed down, injuring his ankle and damaging a nerve in his arm. Mr Blake said Mr Bankroft then called the police. Pc Nick Parker and Pc Philip Hollioake arrived, but Daniel Cronin hit Pc Hollioake on the head and John Cronin punched Pc Parker in the cheek, knocking him to the floor.

John Cronin then grabbed PC Hollioake by the neck and hit him. The officer sprayed him with CS gas and the pair were arrested.

Barney Waylen, defending Daniel Cronin, said Mr Brand had herded the defendants' group down the street like sheep, to frighten them.

The trial continues.
