Witney's MP David Cameron has backed a campaign to re-open the Cotswold canals.
The move would link the Thames with the River Severn and open up leisure and tourism opportunities.
The MP supported the restoration project during an adjournment debate in the House of Commons.
"The upper part of the Thames, which flows through my constituency from the edge of Lechlade in the west to just outside Eynsham in the east, would benefit from this link," said Mr Cameron.
"I support any moves to reopen the Cotswold canals, which would link the Severn and the Thames."
The MP said tourism was already West Oxfordshire's largest employer and income earner.
