Peter Poirrette

Former treasurer of Oxford City Football Club Peter Poirrette has died aged 81.

Mr Poirrette was treasurer of the club for 11 years and stood down in 1971.

He lived in Sugworth Crescent, Radley, between 1958 and 1991, before moving to Basingstoke, in Hampshire.

He grew up in Birkdale, near Southport, Lancashire, and served in the RAF during the Second World War.

After moving to Oxfordshire to train as a teacher, he worked at Cowley St Christopher School and later Larkrise County First School, east Oxford.

He retired from teaching in his late 50s and took a job as a library assistant at Oxford's central library.

His daughter, Helen Flintoff, said: "He had a lively mind and he was always interested in new ideas.

"He was a keen golfer in his early life, but he didn't really take that up again until he retired. He was always interested in all kinds of sport."

She added he was heavily involved in village life in Radley and served as a church warden.

Jim Padbury, who was on Oxford City FC's committee at the same time as Mr Poirrette, said: "He was very quiet and reserved. He was a very efficient treasurer."

John Shepperd, who has been secretary of the football club for 27 years, added: "He was very popular.

"He got on with everybody and was very efficient at what he did as treasurer."

Mr Poirrette's first wife, Joan, died in 1985. He remarried the following year and his second wife, also called Joan, died in 1991.

Mr Poirrette suffered from Alzheimer's Disease for the last ten years of his life and went to live with Mrs Flintoff in 1991.

He lived at Homefield House nursing home, in Basingstoke, for the last six years of his life.

He died on December 16 as a result of Alzheimer's. A funeral service was held at Basingstoke Crematorium on December 20. He leaves two daughters, Mrs Flintoff and Ruth Gordon, and four grandchildren.
